Glossy magazines tell us that black is the thing to be seen in, but try wearing it to your own husband's funeral and see how sexy you feel then. Widowhood is neither fashionable nor glamorous. Every woman dreams of marrying the perfect man, but losing him is something that none of us is ever prepared for. 'Merrywidow.me.uk is a practical guide for women needing clear, simple advice. And just in case you decide not to read any further because the name implies that I’m some smiley-faced Prozac princess who has numbed out all the grief, I’ll tell you here and now that my happiness has nothing to do with drugs and everything to do with self-belief. Be warned, though – I cannot offer a quick fix for what you are going through – only a way to see that there will be a time when you don’t feel as you do now.And if I can help just one young widow to feel that her life isn’t hopeless now that her husband has gone, then all of this will be worthwhile.

I have often said that people need some way of openly demonstrating that they are in mourning, and thankfully Glenda Kirby has taken it upon herself to organise the distribution of a charity wristband as part of a national campaign to raise public awareness and promote the valuable service bereavement organisations provide . The Remembrance wristbands are now available from www.chariband.co.uk and also from funeral directors, florists and retailers. The bands are black, and feature the wording, '"Loved today, yesterday and forever more" .
