See a shrink…are you mad?

Well, very possibly, but death tends to make you slightly unhinged, and it’s nice to be able to talk to somebody who might show a bit of understanding, rather than strapping you into restraints and calling for an ambulance.

I have spent the last four years answering e-mails from many hundreds of bereaved people, young and old. I became rather disillusioned with the notion that drugs or counselling are the only options open to people suffering a traumatic loss, and determined to find a more practical, and positive solution.

My philosophy is simple; that positive energy, empathy and practical advice are far more effective that passive nodding, or Prozac. I believe in a holistic approach to dealing with grief, but don’t be put off by that word, because I’m not some New Age loon with a head full of lentils and a pocket full of crystals, I have just realised that mind, body and spirit have to be treated together, and not as separate entities. If you’re depressed then your immune system will be weakened, but improving your diet and introducing regular exercise and relaxation techniques will restore the balance, more quickly and safely than chemical stabilisers, and there will be no side-effects or issue of dependency.

Testimonials

'Having lost my wife to cancer in March 2005, 20 months on I felt I'd
reached a crossroads, an impasse even, in relation to issues surrounding
my wife's death and other life aspects involving myself and my children. I
decided to find someone to talk things through with and identified Kate as
someone with the relevant life experience and abilities. I made a good
choice. My consultation was a great success. I came
away with a positive outlook on certain issues and some definite ideas as
to how to help my children with their grieving. Kate's relaxed manner,
experience, and insight encouraged me to talk openly on a subjects such as
my wife's illness, our life together, death, dealing with grieving children
and future relationships. Two weeks on I feel I have more ideas to move on
with and am more relaxed about issues that were previously bothering me. I
am planning to have further consultations in the future.'
